Courtyard gardens
In the days of Maria Theresa and her
court architect Daniel Huber courtyards and front gardens were peaceful
havens with good air, buffering the noises of the bustling city, yet
today we know most of our inner city courtyards only as concrete
storage areas for refuse bins and derelict bicycles. Ecowork’s landscapers
and engineers offer advice on the restoration and revitalisation
of courtyards, providing estimates and information on obtaining available
grants and subsequently carrying out design and execution.
Particularly in dense and built-up historic urban areas, courtyards represent a potential for open area space as compensation for the lack of green spaces. Courtyard gardens not only beautify cities they also have a very positive effect on the micro climate by humidifying, absorbing sound and filtering air. They also help protect buildings by acting as natural and aesthetic thermal insulators and provide areas for relaxation, play and communication.
We offer free consultation, representation and advice at Letting/Property Owner’s meetings, information on grants, design, execution and maintenance all in one.

Advantages of a revitalised courtyard with garden
- Shrubs, trees and bushes are chosen carefully to suit prevailing light conditions. They act as natural air conditioners, humidifiers, air filters and sound absorbers.
- Ivy or wild grape growing up a façade have a cooling effect and are natural thermal insulators, creating little air pockets between wall and vines. The building fabric is also protected from the effects of harsh weather such as driving rain.
- A rising of water ground levels, improvement of soil quality and unburdening of purification plants can be achieved by unsealing spaces and replacing with earth, bark chippings and high-drainage paving,
- Children’s play areas fill the courtyard with vitality, children love it and parents can feel assured of their safe enclosure.
- Corner seats and garden benches are inviting focal points and informal communication areas.
- The garden promises the residents lovely views and makes a life in nature possible even in the most built-up of urban areas.
